This summer, my shopping addiction at Target ran rampant. Their summer clothes were off-the-hook cute, and I couldn’t resist buying new items every time I went there.
But over the past few weeks, I’ve managed to grab control of the situation as I decided that my shopping cart should meet the following criteria:
- 80-90%: meet an objective
- 20-10%: just for fun
On my most recent shopping trip, my objective was to pick up some things that would make my everyday life better and less messy. Here’s how the cart turned out:
- Dish drying mat = less water everywhere (met objective)
- Containers to organize bathroom cabinet = easier to find things when I get ready (met objective)
- Black shower curtain = improve sleep by blocking out bright-ass alley light (met objective)
- Food = ya know, survival (met objective)
- Candle = I like nice smelling things (pleasure)
So this cart met my goals – 80% helped me meet an objective, and 20% for fun.
Now, if you’re like, “I don’t care about your shopping trip, Tiff,” that’s cool. But I realized that this new standard for shopping should be applied to websites too! #lightbulb
Introducing: The 90/10 Rule.
The goal for your website should be:
- 90% what will help you meet your business objectives
- 10% stuff you think is cool
Technically, it should be 100%, but in reality, some things are fun and need to be added to show your personality.
It’s pretty simple math (Tiff doesn’t do difficult math). If you want people to come to your site and take action, you can’t clutter up their path to success with the latest flashy things because they look cool.
Useful content is compelling content. That new sidebar widget may be fun to play with, but is it helping you meet your objectives, or is it distracting site visitors from your main call-to-action?
Your homework this week (if you want to make your website as effective and money-making as possible):
Go through each page of your site and assign each item on the page an Objective category or a Cool category.
If a page fails to meet the 90/10 criteria (or fall within a very close range), then it’s time to fix that ratio.
Everything on your site should be there to help you meet your business goals and objectives – if they’re not, they’re cluttering your site and stealing attention away from things that matter.
