The one question you need to ask to get your website shit together

October 5, 2015 by Tiff

That blog post title is so clickbait-y, right? I know, I know.

But honestly, I really believe in what I’m about to say and want to spread the word as much as possible. And sometimes that calls for clickbait titles. DEAL.

questionaskwebsitetogetherA little back story:

At my 9-5 job (yes, I’m a side hustler), I’m the Senior Web Specialist. I’m a big deal. JK. That means that I have a say in what happens on the company website, I’m responsible for keeping things consistent and up to our company’s standard, and I get to talk strategy with people in regards to their web projects.

And part of my job also involves being a pain in the ass, because I ask one thing that could put a roadblock on their project if they can’t come up with a good answer. I ask them:

WHY?

Why do you need to do this?
Why does it need to be on the homepage?
Why is this information not included?
Why is this a priority right now?

Pain in the ass, right?

But 'why' is one of the most important questions we need to ask for a kickass website. Click To Tweet [Read more…]

The 90/10 rule for an effective website

September 13, 2015 by Tiff

90-10ruleeffectivewebsitesStory time!

This summer, my shopping addiction at Target ran rampant. Their summer clothes were off-the-hook cute, and I couldn’t resist buying new items every time I went there.

But over the past few weeks, I’ve managed to grab control of the situation as I decided that my shopping cart should meet the following criteria:

  • 80-90%: meet an objective
  • 20-10%: just for fun

On my most recent shopping trip, my objective was to pick up some things that would make my everyday life better and less messy. Here’s how the cart turned out: [Read more…]

How to easily re-purpose old blog posts into a stylish e-book

August 22, 2015 by Tiff

easilyrepurposeblogpostsintostylishebookA few weeks ago a company called Beacon reached out to me and asked if I’d be interested in trying out their new plugin of the same name that allows you to create a fully designed e-book from your WordPress blog post archives. For free.

Um, YES. Give it to me.

So I gave it a shot, and it’s incredibly cool! There are a few hiccups and bugs that I’ll talk about later on, but I’ve embedded a sample e-book below so you can see how it turned out: [Read more…]

Doing the work to get the audience

August 17, 2015 by Tiff

doingtheworkaudienceIt’s 10:41 on Sunday night, and I’ve spent about 20 hours this past weekend working. My laptop and I have become best buds (when I’m not taking time outs to cuddle with my actual best bud).

I’m releasing two e-books this week, and holy lord has it been quite the task putting these babies together! I’m not even done yet, but luckily I came to a very helpful conclusion along the way so I can write this very blog post.

Sometimes you have to do the work to find out who you really want to serve.

There’s a big push to find out who your audience is first, so that you can then create a product or service just for them.

And believe me, I think that makes TOTAL sense. If you have a vision in your head of the person you want to work with, then that helps you create packages, write copy, design your website, etc.

But sometimes you have to do the work before you find out who that person is. And that means you start out with a rough sketch of who your audience is, but it’s not until you get down and dirty that you figure it out. Let me explain… [Read more…]

Take your blog from hobby to money

July 27, 2015 by Tiff

Take your blog from hobby to money (using ebooks for passive income) | Tiff(dot)comAlright guys. Over the past two weeks, I’ve written longer posts with totally helpful and actionable items to make your blog post images branded and profesh, and make sure your blog isn’t guilty of design sins.

This week, we’re going super fun 🎉 and thinking about ways to make money on your blog! Specifically, how to make money with an e-book rather than with a service. To explain:

⇒ Service:
one-on-one projects that require continual work with clients in order to get paid

⇒ E-book:
write an e-book, and then sell without required continual work – do the work once, get paid many times.

So, based on those explanations, you can see that writing an e-book is a better use of your time, because it is passive income.

You might be ready to take that step toward making passive income (or any income at all) on your blog, but maybe you’re stuck for ideas. The thing is, you can write an e-book that combines your passions with your expertise. [Read more…]
